Education and Internship

I am a graduate of The John Carroll School in Bel Air and of Loyola University. While I was in college I had the good fortune to work in the White House as an Intern to Sarah Weddington, Special Assistant to the President on Women's Issues. Ms Weddington's vast experience included successfully arguing Roe v Wade, the landmark United States Supreme Court case making abortion legal in the United States. Ms. Weddingtons drive and passion for protecting womens reproductive rights and the Constitution that guaranteed those rights served as a catalyst for me to pursue a career in law. After receiving my Master's Degree from John's Hopkins University I went on to law school receiving my Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1988.

Inspiration

I was drawn to the practice of law after watching my father Lester V. Jones, a criminal defense attorney, fight tirelessly for the accused. He was passionate about his work and he derived great satisfaction from helping others. In 1980 my father successfully appealed the conviction of Donald J. Kelly, a Bel Air Police Officer, in which a lie detector test was admitted as evidence against him. He argued on appeal that such tests are unreliable to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and therefore unconstitutional. That decision in 1980 is still good law today! Watching my father defend the Constitution so passionately fueled my desire to follow in his footsteps.

When you are charged with a crime, the State of Maryland with all of it's resources is trying to convict you, take away your good name and deprive you of your liberty. As a Criminal defense attorney, it is my job to defend you and to defend the Constitution making sure that you get a fair trial.

Proudest moment as a Trial Attorney

My proudest moment as a trial attorney came a couple of years ago when a jury returned a "Not Guilty" verdict in a case where my client had been accused of attempting to murder two men. A couple of hours prior to the shooting, my client and his family had been the victims of a brutal home invasion committed by those same men. When they returned to my client's home a couple of hours later, he shot them in self defense. The State prosecuted my client saying that he was nothing more than a vigilante. Really? When those men came to his home the first time, they pistol whipped my client. When they came back a couple of hours later, what was my client to believe? The Jury verdict, to say the least, was gratifying. My client was facing a life sentence and most people in the legal community believed that it was an indefensible case given that the shooting occurred outside of his home. I believed from the very beginning that a Jury would not convict my client of attempted murder and I was passionate about defending him against what I believed was a grave injustice. Although not all of my cases are this serious or complex I strive to work diligently to prepare a defense in each case.

If you have been arrested or charged with a crime it is critically important that you consult with an experienced trial lawyer. Please contact me to schedule a free consultation to discuss your case
